SMSC

Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural (SMSC)

Scientia Academy is located in an area which is culturally diverse and we are proud to promote and celebrate our different cultures and faiths. We aim to celebrate all of these by offering our children an enriching educational experience.

Spiritual Development

Children will learn about all major faiths through weekly RE lessons using the RE Discovery curriculum.

In addition we will:

Invite in speakers from local religious organisations.

Arrange visits to local places of worship

Moral Development

Assemblies are focused on morals and the messages found in multi-faith and cultural stories, the children will share a story and go over the moral, reinforcing the importance of good behaviours and attitudes.

Circle Time/PSHE topics will enable children to recognise the difference between right and wrong.

The school behaviour policy develops the understanding of being a 'Scientia Citizen' which promotes strong moral values.

The school behaviour policy will be shared with parents to ensure that they are clear with all procedures.

Social Development

We will appoint a School Parliament through a whole school process to demonstrate democracy in action to our children and allowing them to air their views.

Children will participate in a variety of local and national charity events to develop children's awareness of the wider world.

We will celebrate family life and participation in school through events across the year.

Children will be taught and encouraged to respect each other’s beliefs through PSHE and topic lessons.

Success will be celebrated in our Celebration Assemblies.

All children and staff are part of House Teams, this forms basis for in-house competitions and collaboration. House captains are elected democratically.

Cultural Development

Children will be made aware of the diversity of other cultures both within modern Britain and throughout the school. This can be done through music, PE, art and many other curriculum areas, as seen in our broad and balanced curriculum.

Cultural diversity will be celebrated throughout the school in displays, in the books and resources we share with children and through careful consideration of the curriculum we offer.

Children will participate in a range of activities:

  • Trips to local cultural establishments, e.g. theatre and museums
  • After school clubs to participate in a range of sports
  • Authors, poets and artists are invited into school for workshops & assemblies
  • Children from all year groups will perform in plays and concerts
  • Residential trips
  • Participation in 11B411
