Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural (SMSC)
Scientia Academy is located in an area which is culturally diverse and we are proud to promote and celebrate our different cultures and faiths. We aim to celebrate all of these by offering our children an enriching educational experience.

Spiritual Development

Children across school will research a range of religious events during the school year and perform an assembly to develop everyone's spiritual awareness.

Whole school: Harvest and Christmas assemblies

EYFS - Will study a range of festivals through the 'Understanding of the world' curriculum. These will include: Harvest, Chinese New Year and Diwali.

Year 1 – Eid assembly
Year 2 – Holi
Year 3 – Vaisakhi

Year 4 - Yom Kippur

Year 5 - Easter

Year 6 - Diwali

In addition we will:

Invite in speakers from local religious organisations.

Arrange visits to local places of worship.

Timetable weekly RE lessons following the Staffordshire Syllabus.

Moral Development

Monday Assemblies are focussed on morals and the messages found in multi-faith and cultural stories, the children will share a story and go over the moral, reinforcing the importance of good behaviours and attitudes.

Circle Time/PSHE topics will enable children to recognise the difference between right and wrong.

Class charters will be agreed by the children at the start of every academic year.

We will use Marvellous ME to inspire children to strive for the best classroom learning behaviour across the school and celebrate successes with parents and immediate family.

A home/school agreement will be signed by children, parents and school to ensure we are all working together to uphold our responsibilities.

The school behaviour policy will be shared with parents to ensure that they are clear with all procedures.

Social Development

We will appoint a School Parliament through a whole school process to demonstrate democracy in action to our children and allowing them to air their views.

Children will participate in a Macmillan coffee morning, Children in Need, Sport Relief, Comic Relief and support local community charities and events.

We will have in- school events such as a coffee morning for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and a Grandparents Day.

Children will be taught and encouraged to respect each other’s beliefs through PSHE and topic lessons.

Success will be celebrated in our Celebration Assemblies. There will be attendance awards for individual children and classes.

We will elect school prefects who will carry out different duties around the school to help uphold our school culture. Duties will include: modelling for other children how to behave well; helping visitors who come to the school; taking responsibility for helping the school office; organising other pupils at assembly time; working with the teachers to make our school the best it can be.

Cultural Development

Cultural diversity will be celebrated throughout the school in displays, in the books we share with children and through careful consideration of the curriculum we offer.

Children will participate in a range of activities:

Burton Albion and high quality PE teaching develop children’s sporting skills.

Extra-curricular clubs will be offered in a range of sport and personal skills including cooking, debating and tennis.

Rock It music will provide weekly music lessons – allowing children the chance to learn to play the keyboard, the ukulele and to perform in a steel band.
