The school curriculum in England
Every state-funded school must offer a curriculum, which is balanced and broadly based, and which:
- promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society,
- prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
- The school curriculum comprises all learning and other experiences that each school plans for its pupils. The national curriculum forms one part of the school curriculum.
This year there have been a number of changes that have been made to ensure that we meet the above expectations of the curriculum. The school has invested in a number of teaching schemes to ensure best outcomes for our children. We will be hosting a number of coffee mornings to discuss these in greater detail, below is a short summary of the schemes that we will be following.
Read Write Inc.
Read Write Inc., developed by Ruth Miskin, provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy. It is used by more than a quarter of the UK’s primary schools and is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.
Each Read Write Inc. programme meets the higher expectations of the National Curriculum and uses effective assessment to accelerate every child’s progress and prepare them for the 2016 National Curriculum Tests.
Literacy and Language
Literacy and Language is a complete literacy programme for fluent readers – all children in Years 2 to Year 6 read, write and discuss texts with maturity. The programme is totally aligned to the new National Curriculum in a fun and meaningful way.
- Gives every child a deep understanding of what they read using the special ‘three reads’ approach
- Fully prepares every child for writing using a planning, drafting and revising method
- Teaches grammar in context so that children can apply it seamlessly in their own writing
- Supports the grammar and punctuation aspects of the Key Stage 1 and 2 tests
- Includes practice tests to build confidence prior to statutory assessment
- Creates articulate speakers where children justify their answers and learn how to debate.
- Literacy and Language children write confidently and enthusiastically because they have something to say.
- And they love reading at home – the biggest indicator of success.
Singapore Maths Overview
Singapore has become a “laboratory of maths teaching” by incorporating established international research into a highly effective teaching approach. With its emphasis on teaching pupils to solve problems, Singapore Maths teaching is the envy of the world.
- Singapore consistently top the international benchmarking studies for maths teaching
- A highly effective approach to teaching maths based on research and evidence
- Builds students’ mathematical fluency without the need for rote learning
- Introduces new concepts using Bruner’s Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) approach
- Pupils learn to think mathematically as opposed to reciting formulas they don’t understand
- Teaches mental strategies to solve problems such as drawing a bar model
Rapid Reading books are designed for one-to-one reading sessions with learners in Key Stage 1 and 2. Great care has been taken to combine age-appropriate content that is engaging for 6 to 10 year olds with levelled texts pitched at a lower reading ability.
- Books begin at Starter Level A, designed for a reading age of 5 years to 5 years and 3 months, and go through to Level 6b, for a reading age of 8 years to 8 years 5 months. For children about to go up to Secondary school, or already in Year 7, Rapid also has a range of Stage 7-9 books.
- With over 112 print books to choose from, there’s plenty in each fine level to give repeat practice to children who may move on to the next level slowly – and there’s a wide variety of highly engaging topics from animals to space travel to hook in even the most reluctant boys. What’s more, each book contains two different texts – fiction and non-fiction – around a single theme, so there’s a genre to suit all tastes.
- With cool illustrations, chunked texts and a special dyslexic-friendly font, each book is age-appropriate and finely leveled to ensure you’ll always have the right book for each child.
- Rapid authors include well-known children’s writers such as Dee Reid, Haydn Middleton and Simon Cheshire.
- Each text also includes a quiz section to build children’s understanding of the text.
Parents & Carers
Parents can obtain more information about the curriculum by visiting the school and arranging a meeting with your child’s class teacher. We also hold regular curriculum coffee mornings and termly parent consultation days.
Length and Control of School Sessions
Children aged between 5 – 7 years (KS1) have a weekly session of twenty-five hours and fifty minutes, excluding lunch breaks. In each week twenty one hours and fifteen minutes is allocated by law to the school curriculum which includes Religious Education.
One hour and fifteen minutes each week is allowed for registration, fifty minutes each week is allowed for Collective Worship, two hours and thirty minutes is allowed for mid-session breaks (playtimes).
Children aged 7 – 11 years (KS2) have a weekly session of twenty-six hours excluding lunch breaks.

Key Stage 1 & 2 12.00pm—1.00pm
Finish: Reception : 3.15pm
